Nathaniel Adams Coles, bilinen profesyonel adıyla Nat "King" Cole (d. 17 Mart 1919 - ö. 15 Şubat 1965) Popüler ABD`li şarkıcı, şarkı sözü yazarı ve caz piyanisti.
Hayatı
ABD`nin Alabama eyaletinde, Montgomery şehrinde doğdu. Daha çocukken ailesiyle Chicago`ya taşındı. Babası papazlığa yükselmiş ve annesi de kilise orgcusu olmuştur. Cole Org çalmayı bu sırada öğrenmeye başladı. 12 yaşına kadar annesi ona öğretmenlik yapmıştır. Caz ve gospel dışında Johann Sebastian Bach`tan Sergei Rachmaninoff`a birçok besteciyle tanışarak klasik batı müziği bilgisini ilerletti.Cole çeşitli caz klüplerinde Louis Armstrong, Earl "Fatha" Hines ve Jimmie Noone gibi sanatçıları dinledi. Öğrenimi sırasında müzik programlarına katıldı. 1930`larda, daha çocukken müzisyenlik kariyerine başladı ve "Nat Cole" ismini benimsedi. Caz klüplerinde orkestrası ile çalışan Cole 1936 yılında kardeşiyle ilk kaydını yapmıştır. Eubie Blake`ün revüsünde piyanist olarak görev aldı ve gösteriyle ülke çapındaki tura katıldı.
Long Beach`te üç müzisyenle beraber kurduğu "King Cole Swingers" orkestrası ile birlikte yerel barlarda çalıştı. Daha sonra dansçı Nadine Robinson ile evlenmiş, Los Angeles`a taşınarak Nat King Cole Trio`yu (Nat King Cole Üçlüsü) kurmuştur. Cole bu üçlüde piyanist olarak görev alırken, Oscar Moore grubun gitaristi, Wesley Prince ise basçısıydı. Grup 1930`ların sonlarına kadar radyo kayıtları da yaptı.
Cole popülaritesini ilk olarak "Sweet Lorraine" ile 1940 yılında yakaladı. Piyanistliği dışında bazı şarkılara sesiyle de katılmasına rağmen bu konuda utangaçtı. Diksiyonuyla gururlanmakla beraber hiçbir zaman iyi bir şarkıcı olduğunu düşünmemiştir; yumuşak okuyuşu zamanının caz vokalistlerinin tarzlarıyla uyuşmamaktaydı.
Çocukluğu ve Chicago
Doğum adı Nathaniel Adams Coles olan sanatçı Montogomery Alabama`da doğdu.Doğum günü dünya almanağında 1919 yılı Saint Patrick gününe denk gelmektedir.Bazı kaynaklarda ise doğum yılı 1917 yılında gösterilmektedir.Babasının asıl mesleği kasaplık olsada aynı zamanda kilisede papaz yardımcığı da yapmıştır.Daha sonra babası aynı kilisede papaz olmuştur.Annesi Perlina da aynı kilise de kilise orgunu çalmaktaydı.Nat,12 yaşına kadar annesinden kilise orgunu çalma hakkında dersler aldı.Ardından daha resmi dersler alarak müzik öğrenimine devam etti.ilk canlı performansını 4 yaşında iken sergiledi.Eğitimi sadece caz türünde olmadı,cazın yanı sıra Avrupa klasik müziği eserlerini de öğrenerek klasik müziği de öğrendi.Örneğin sergilediği Johann Sebastian Bach`tan Sergei Rachmaninoff`a adlı performansı bunu en iyi şekilde kanıtlar.Ailesi Chicago`ya yakın olan Bronzeville`de yaşadı.Nat sürekli bu civarlardaki kafe ve barların etrafında zaman geçirdi.Bu sırada Louis Armstrong ,Earl Hines,Jimmie Noone gibi müzik dünyasının ünlü isimlerinin şarkılarını dinledi.Ayrıca aynı yıllarda Walter Dyett`in bir projesi olan DuSable High School adlı okulda yapılan bir programda yer aldı.
Earl Hines eserlerini çalarak profesyonel kariyerine 1630 lu yılların ortalarında ``Nat Cole`` ismiyle henüz çok gençken başladı.Abisi Eddie Coles da daha sonra bas gitarist olarak Nat`in grubuna Eddie`s adıyla 1936 yılında katıldı.O yıl ilk kayıtlarını aynı isimle yaptılar.Ardından düzenli olarak civardaki müzikli yerlerde sahne almaya başladılar.Sonraları yine bir jazz performansı sırasında ``King`` takma adı onun için kullanıldı.
Aynı zamanda Broadway Tiyatrosunda piyanistlik yaptı.Eubie Blake`in revüsünde çaldı.Ardından Long Beach- Kaliforniya`da kalmaya karar verdi.
Los Angeles And King Cole Üçlüsü
Nat Cole ve üç müzisyen önce ``King Cole Swingers`` adlı grubu kurdu.Grup ilk kurulduğu zaman Long Beach`de ki canlı müzik olan barlarda çaldı ve haftada 90 dolar kazanır hale geldi.Bu para 1930lu yıllara göre bir grup için yüksek bir paraydı.Nat daha önceki grubu olan ``Shuffle Along``un dansçısı Nadine Robinson ile evlendi.Evlendikten sonra Los Angeles`a taşındılar ve orda Cole `` Nat King Cole`` üçlüsünü kurdu.Üçlüde,Nat piyanoda,Oscar Moore gitarda ve Wesley Price da bastaydı.grup 1930`lu yılların sonlarına kadar Los Angeles`da çaldı ve bir çok demo kaydetti.Grupta Nat`in rolü piyanoyu çalmak ve topluluğa liderlik etmekti.Nat şarkıcılık kariyerine ,barda bulunan önemli bir müşterinin ``Sweet Lorrainei söylemesinin istemesine kadar başlamadı.Olay aynen şöyle gelişmişti.Müşteri çok zengin ve gece klübüne sürekli gelen bir şahsiyetti.Ardından bir şekilde Nat`den Sweet Lorraine`i söylemesini istedi.Nat de bu teklifi ``Pen piyanistim piyano çalarım şarkı söylemem`` diyerek reddetti.Hemen sonrasında müşteri ``Yoksa blmiyormusun?`` diyerek tekrar Nat`e yüklendi.Fakat Nat tekrar bu teklifi ``Tabii ki biliyorum ama yapmayacağım`` diyerek ikinci kez geri çevirdi.Bunun üzerine müşteri bunu patrona ileteceğini söyleyerek uzaklaşıp patrona gitti.Bu olaydan sonra patron Nat`in yanına gelerek onun buranın en önemli müşterisi olduğunu ve şarkıyı söylemek zorunda olduğunun aksi halde Nat`in ve grubunun işine son vereceğini söyledi.Bunu üzerine Nat`in şarkıcılık kariyeri başladı.1928 yapımı ``Sweet Lorraine`` 1940 yılında Nat`in ilk hit parçası oldu.
İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında Wesley Prince`ın gruptan ayrılması üzerine Nat onun yerine Johnny Miller`ı gruba dahil etti.Ardından üçlü 1943`te Capitol Records addlı müzik şirketiyle anlaşma imzaladı.Nat tüm kariyeri boyunca bu şirketle çalışmaya devam etti.Nat`in albümlerinin hem müzikal anlamda hem de parasal anlamda başarılı olmasından sonra Capitol Records Los Angeles-Hollywood and Vine adlı bölgede büyük bir bina yaptırdı.1956`de inşası biten binaya ``the house that Nat built`` de denmektedir.
